We Are Education

The Church of the Epiphany is dedicated to providing a special place
for everyone within our church family.

Our Christian Education Schedule
Our Christian Education Hour is each Sunday from 10:00-11:00 for every one of any age. In addition to this hour, there is a 9:00 Sunday morning adult class, Tuesday Bible study from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and Wednesday night classes from 7:15-8:15.

Good Shepherd Program

Nursery
Infants and children under five are welcome each Sunday from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Both the infant and toddler rooms are located in the lower level of the education building.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level 1
Children from three through five meet across the hall from the nursery in a program of religious formation which is Biblical and sacramental. It is respectful of the nature of young children who make their way to God in freedom and joy. Four catechists work with the children in areas called: Altar, Baptism, Life of Jesus, Parables of the Kingdom, Geography of Israel and Jerusalem, Practical Life, and Response to God in prayer, art and music.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level 2 - The True Vine
Children from first and second grades begin with prayer, song and snacks before settling to work in four centers: Unity of the History of God, Bible with Map Study, Life and Parables of Jesus and Sacraments. At this age children begin to understand time and history - both in the past and in the future as they examine God's Plan in the world with pivotal points of Creation, Redemption, and the End of Time when God's Kingdom will come. Catechists make presentations and serve as resources for the children who work independently or in small groups. This class meets next door to the Good Shepherd Atrium.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level 2 - True Vine 2
Children of third and fourth grades are in the True Vine 2 atrium upstairs in the Education Building. The curriculum continues in the four centers of True Vine, but in more depth and with additional parables and details in the Old and New Testaments. In the spring each year third graders have a Communion Retreat in which they examine their baptismal vows and their response to God's Gifts of mercy, forgiveness and grace. Those fourth graders who have never attended a Communion Retreat are included in the retreat.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level 3 - Covenant 1
Students in the fifth and sixth grades work with details of a time line from 12,000 B.C.E. to the present and beyond. They examine ten ancient civilizations whose gifts were left to people who came after them, plus the Jewish People who worshiped the God of Abraham. Study of Biblical Creation, Fall, Flood, and Abraham are followed with New Testament studies of Jesus' Parables, Maxims and Miracles. Prayer Book studies of the two Sacraments and other rites of the Church are included in the curriculum.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level 3 - Covenant 2
Students in the seventh and eighth grades continue the Plan of God begun in Covenant 1 with the History and Worship of the Jewish People using an illustrated time line. They then begin Church History preparing an illustrated time line from the Church of the Apostles through the Roman Empire, Medieval Europe, Renaissance and Reformation, Anglican Settlement, and the Americas. The final part of Church History includes present and possible future movements in Ecumenism, Interfaith Dialogue and the concept of Christian Hope. Bible work and typology continues with the Exodus and the Prophets, followed by individual and group work on Jesus' teachings in parables, maxims and miracles. Sacrament study includes the rites of Ministration to the Sick, Ordination, Reconciliation, Confirmation and Marriage. Young people seeking guidelines in their lives explore the moral parables of Jesus in depth and learn of strength received through the sacraments.

Senior High School Class – 9th-12th Grades
This group meets in their upstairs room, using a lectionary study program which is based on the Bible readings used in the church each Sunday. Discussion follows as they apply the readings to current issues and concerns in the news and in their lives.

Adult Classes Offered on Sunday Mornings
The Gospel and the New York Times meets from 9:00 to 10:00 in the chapel each Sunday. It is an open discussion of current events and the lectionary readings for the day. A rotating convener begins the discussion.
Lectionary Lecture and Discussion is held during the education hour from 10:00-11:00 each Sunday morning in the Parish Hall.
Adult Bible Study meets in the library in the education building from 10 to 11 o'clock. The group selects a book in the fall which is studied with the help of two leaders each Sunday.
