Another exciting year has passed, and the ushers' reputation has again spread at Epiphany and around the world. Receiving an "Outstanding" again on our annual diocesan review, we were invited to many activities we could not schedule (Bishop-Elect Griswold's Installation, Lady Diana's funeral, Pope John's Easter Blessing, etc.). But we had a productive year, welcomed new members, and provided the understated service our congregation has grown to expect. |
| We thank the vestry this year for the funds to implement the Usher Exchange Program we sponsored for the International Order of Ushers (IOU). Our three week trip to Jamaica allowed us to present our world-renowned ushering symposium there. Afterwards, the Jamaican ushers came to Epiphany to see our highly trained and efficient ushering corps in action. While we were in Jamaica, the transportation and housing needs were adequately met with our 90 foot, chartered windjammer, allowing access to the more remote Islands.
With an exhausting schedule, we did find time to unwind. There wasn't a dry eye when Horace May, Isaac Netty, and L.C. Mitchell sat in at "The Reggae Shack" showing their hidden talents in a tribute to the late Bob Marley. And how about Bonnie O'Shea's new look in the Rastafarian knit cap and dreadlocks! Following Jim Eaton's tour of the Bacardi facility, the Altar Guild wisely rejected his idea of communion rum. On the Sunday of our return, everyone got to enjoy Roger Jenkins' and Barbara Taylor's steel drum prelude. Father Tucker was able to schedule the diocesan jet and fly down for one seminar. While the technical aspects of ushering presented in some workshops were new to him, you all heard about his Jamaican experience in his sermon "My rod and my reel, they comfort me." At home, our balcony conversion to audio/visual control center, luxury suites (PSLs still available from Yvonne Rager), and usher lounge is progressing. Note our new service - should you inadvertently lock your keys in your car on Sunday, an usher can page the EYC teenager on duty to open your car for you (you don't need to know how). They also disarm car alarms, which some do not consider a festive addition to the service. As we continue to lobby for Usher Appreciation Sunday, we offer our new, full-color brochure and TV infomercial on ushering for those interested in joining us. All are welcome (written and physical exams required). Come enjoy this unique service at Epiphany. We enjoy meeting, greeting, and serving with humility and pride. Respectfully submitted, David Anthony, Coordinator |
